I wrote a poem a year ago while reading Patti Smith's inspiring memoir ('Just Kids') about her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe on January and February 2015.
I dedicate this song to Patti Smith, with thanx.

The girl dreamed of Ethiopia
In the footsteps of a poet

Wandering dusty bookstores
In search of forgotten memories
The boy was an image
Echoing in the cosmos
The girl was a string of words
In search of meaningful rhythms

They were the future
Searching themselves in the shadows
The boy had a vision
Kaleidoscope of broken postcards
The girl had knowledge
From watching wandering friends

Loving and trusting
Accepting each other
The boy was drifting away
But always coming back
The girl was his anchor
His muse and art companion

From galleries to museums

15 in a daze of dreams
I saw her stare back at me
Through the eyes of her altar boy

Shattering the night
In the coil of her voice

As I was I couldn't know
Couldn't perceive, could barely glimpse
The spiral of a lifetime
Gifted me understanding
I followed the flow of her voice
Accepting and respecting
