(I dreamed of restored planet, Brazil nuts, bees, orchids, primary forests, woolly monkeys, peccaries)
I remember being 8, my father driving through the outskirts of the city. Dirty yellow smoke coming out of the giant chimneys in the industrial areal. I used to look at it with eyes of innocence, but my mind was crawling with questions. Is it the end of the world?
For every war they said it would be the last one. But there always were bombs and napalm. Governments were acting for the good of all. More nuclear plants, more nuclear weapons. Chimps were banging their heads against the walls of their bare cells. Wimin walk down to Greenham.
I DREAMED OF A RESTORED PLANET. BRAZIL NUTS, BEES, ORCHIDS. PRIMARY FORESTS, WOOLLY MONKEYS, PECCARIES.
They were white and powerful. They believed they were the only beings inhabited by souls. They parked Native American Peoples in reservations where the soil was so dry that crops wouldn’t grow, wouldn’t feed the Keepers of the Earth. They trampled cultures and civilizations. You think it is the past, but it is still happening. Do you hear me?
Will you wake up one morning, willing to think and act. The Earth needs her children. The children need their mother. Will you open your eyes one morning, ready to stand and save the planet and yourselves, ready to renew the symbiosis between EARTH, WATER, AIR and FIRE. The symbiosis between PLANTS, ANIMALS and HUMANS. Will you wake up now.
I DREAMED OF A RESTORED PLANET. BRAZIL NUTS, BEES, ORCHIDS. PRIMARY FORESTS, WOOLLY MONKEYS, PECCARIES.
In the 60’s they thought woolly monkeys looked so cute and so sweet. They killed the mothers and took the babies, shipping them away by thousands to European cities. The few who didn’t die between two shores, didn’t make it old enough to tell the tale, no matter how golden the bars of the cage.
Poachers need money to survive, it’s a universal law. They know there will always be people to buy the ivory of the murdered elephant, doctors who want the hands of the gorilla for ashtrays in their waiting rooms. And the skin of the snow leopard. And the fur of the baby seal.
I DREAMED OF A RESTORED PLANET. BRAZIL NUTS, BEES, ORCHIDS. PRIMARY FORESTS, WOOLLY MONKEYS, PECCARIES.
Look at people in prison. For many, the major crime is the colour of their skin or their sexual orientation or their opposition to a fascist government. They are human beings like you and I. But do you know anything about them? The truth is once again hidden and buried.
